Week 01: VFX Breakdown

Welcome to my Blog! I’ve been learning Houdini for several months now and I have been absolutely loving it, so this semester I will continue to hone my skills by working on a Houdini VFX shot recreation for my capstone.

For this project I plan on improving upon all of the skills that I’ve been learning such as particle simulations, and learning new skills like pyro and fluid simulations. It wasn’t easy picking a shot to recreate since there are so many great films to choose from, but I always seem to gravitate towards the VFX typically shown in Thor.

I have experience in creating particle simulations but wanted to challenge myself to try something new, so when I saw Thor creating a tornado with his hammer I knew that would be the perfect shot!

The Avengers (2012)

FX Breakdown:

Above is the scene I chose from The Avengers (2012). The plan for this shot is to recreate the first two camera shots, the close up on Thor and the wide shot that follows which more clearly shows his tornado. I began work on this project by creating breakdowns of the FX seen in these two separate shots.
